Picture books look like they’d be easy to write, but anyone who has ever tried crafting a story that entertains and enlightens young readers and their parents knows just how difficult the process can be. All of the pieces of the story must fit perfectly together, and in 1,000 words or less. If you’re struggling to perfect your manuscript, Laurie can help. She has written over a dozen award-winning rhyming and non-rhyming picture books, ghost-written two celebrity picture books, taught workshops about the art of picture book writing at SCBWI (Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) conferences, and critiqued numerous picture book manuscripts, many that have resulted in authors getting agents and/or publication.
Laurie offers critiques of picture book manuscripts of 1,000 words or less. Writers must be at least eighteen years of age. Each critique is a thorough manuscript evaluation and includes:
A comprehensive editorial letter highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of your story as well as feedback and suggestions in the following areas:
A line-edited manuscript with specific wording and structural suggestions to strengthen and improve your story.
A follow-up phone call to discuss suggestions and next steps.
Laurie’s fee for an initial critique is $300.00. Follow-up critiques after revision are available for an additional $100.00. Turnaround time for a critique is one week and payment can be made through check or PayPal. Manuscripts should be submitted as a Word document, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and in 12 point font with word count and contact information included.
Please contact Laurie for more information about picture book critiques, critiques of longer works, and availability.
